The CDC report comes as several states across the country move to end their mask mandates and fully reopen businesses.

CORONAVIRUS CASES AND virus-related death rates declined in communities where states require the use of face coverings, while cases and deaths increased in communities that allowed on-site restaurant dining, according to a new study.

A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that in counties where “requirements support mask use,” the spread of COVID-19 was reduced.

“The CDC recommends a combination of evidence-based strategies to reduce transmission of … COVID-19,” the report states. “Because the virus is transmitted predominantly by inhaling respiratory droplets from infected persons, universal mask use can help reduce transmission.”

The CDC also said that avoiding non-essential shared spaces, such as restaurants where unmasked interactions occur, can also reduce virus spread.

The report comes as several states across the country move to end their mask mandates and fully reopen businesses, worrying experts that COVID-19 cases and deaths will begin to increase again.

According to the report, mandating masks was associated with a decline in daily COVID-19 cases and death growth rates within 20 days of implementation. Conversely, allowing on-site restaurant dining was associated with an increase in daily virus cases 41 to 100 days after implementation and an increase in daily death growth rates from 61 to 100 days after implementation.

“Mask mandates and restricting any on-premises dining at restaurants can help limit community transmission of COVID-19 and reduce case and death growth rates,” the CDC stated. “These findings can inform public policies to reduce community spread of COVID-19.”

The CDC said mask mandates and restricting on-site dining are even more important now due to the emergence of several highly transmissible new variants of COVID-19 in the U.S.
